The news

Last night, Greg made the decision to amputate his right foot. The leg will be cut off below the knee, about half way up the calf.

Our doctor approached us about this option a week ago. He felt like we are at a point where this is a good solution. Right now it is slightly elective. The doctor feels like if we waited until we HAD to amputate it, we would only get a few more months anyway. Right now is a good choice because it's not infected. Also, we have met our maximum out of pocket limit, so the surgery and resulting physical therapy will be completely covered. Greg is young and strong, and the longer we wait the weaker he gets. We need him as strong as we can get him so that getting up on the prosthetic will be easier for him. The bottom line is simply, Greg needs a decent life. And he hasn't had one for a long time.

It's been a difficult decision. Everyone (the doctors, home care nurses, family) all feel it's the best choice, but it was one that Greg had to make. It was hard on him, but last night stubby was red and swollen and warm to the touch. All signs of an infection on the rise. It was enough. Greg wanted to be done. Here's a picture from last night. You can see how bad it looks compared to the post below.

The surgery will happen in the next week or two, depending on how quickly his foot goes downhill. I will be sure to update.

Thanks for your love and support. We are going to need it.
